I present to you the first interview that was specifically done for this site. A lot more will be coming soon. I chopped it up with Sean Falyon yesterday and he talked about his upcoming project "SFBE Jackin' 4 Beats," social media, his beard, collabos and what we can expect from him in the near future.
Sean Falyon: I'm Sean Falyon West Philly's own Atlanta resident and I rhyme words in story form for the people's enjoyment.
SeanTheRobot: I know you started to rap when you were like 13 but when did you know it was something that you wanted to do more so than a regular 9-to-5, was there like a special moment or situation where you just knew it?
SF: The special moment was when I went on tour with BoneCrusher and performed my first show in Stuttgart, Germany. The people showed so much love, it was no turning back from that point.
SeanTheRobot: What jobs did you do before you rapped full time? You worked on a clothing line, right? Can you see yourself ever going back to that?
SF: I worked in corporate America and did the fashion thing. I still got my hand in fashion but music is my focus right now.
SeanTheRobot: You're currently unsigned, do you want to change that or better said are you looking for a label to sign you..or do you enjoy to be able to put out music independently and want to keep it that way?
SF: I love the freedom of being independent but if the situation made sense, I wouldn't turn down being signed. I'm big on brand integration right now, trying to connect my SFBE brand to some of these bigger brands and make some history.
SeanTheRobot: These days everyone's on Twitter, Facebook and/or Tumblr... You also seem to be very active in the whole social media field. How important do you think it is these days to keep in touch with fans and other people via Twitter, Facebook etc. ...and what do you think are the pros and cons of it?
SF: Keeping in contact with fans is the MOST important thing with me. I like to know who's out there supporting me and catering to what they like to hear from me. Social networks have drastically aided in that for me. The only cons I would say is the fact that some folks can't separate social media from real life, even though im active online I still travel and like to get face to face with the fans.
SeanTheRobot: There's a Twitter account called @SeanFalyonBeard ..what's that all about...I mean...are you behind that or is it some fan?
SF: My Beard is a maniac and has somehow found it's way onto Twitter ... I can't control it's action *The views and beliefs of Sean Falyon's BEARD are solely it's own and not Sean Falyon's*
SeanTheRobot: Ha! Now the beard...you're kinda known for that...what made you want to rock one
instead of shaving it?
SF: I started wearing the beard because of religious reasons being that I'm Sunnih Muslim. Over time I began to be recognized for it, people would say "You got that FREEWAY" because my homey Freeway made the beard pretty famous first. After that people just started recognizing me for it and calling me names like "LeBeard James" and "The BEARD". I was down at SXSW in Austin, TX and I ran into Bun B in person for the first time and he was like "THE BEARD", that was dope I was like "OH SHIT."
SeanTheRobot: Your new project 'SFBE Jackin' 4 Beats' drops soon. Why did you decide to drop a project like this; that sees you going in over other people's beats, instead of doing something with all original production?
SF: I was so against rapping over people's beats, all of my projects before this have been original material. One day I was listening to something and was like, "Man I'll kill that shit." That right there was the beginning of the "NO BEAT IS SAFE" campaign. Jamal Jimoh, my manager, encouraged me to keep it going so I did. I look at it like exercise and something to keep the fans entertained.
SeanTheRobot: On your #SFBE2 mixtape you had Nikki Jean on one of your tracks, I'm a big
fan and supporter of her and love what she's doing. Now I know that you're both from Philly but how did you guys meet and how did this track come to fruition?
SF: Me and Nikki got cool over Twitter, we had many mutual friends but Twitter solidified our friendship. We talked on the phone about music and working together and the next time I was in Philly we met up at my homey STS' house and recorded "THE FIX". Nikki is a great person and very talented.
SeanTheRobot: Besides Nikki you also worked with Playboy Tre, Lloyd, Tony Williams and other acts on your previous projects. What's your favorite collabo you've done so far and who would you like to work with in the future?
SF: My favorite collab has to be "WONDERFUL LIFE" with Playboy Tre. I want to work with Pharrell and Timbaland in the future, I think my voice and their production would create something phenomenal. I have a lot of respect for their sound.
SeanTheRobot: What can we expect from you next, is there an album on the way, what are you
working on right now?
SF: "SFBE 7: 7 Degrees of Sean Falyon" is next, it should be out soon. That's a collab project produced by 7King who is also B.O.B's lead guitarist. We have the single "1970 Charger" from that available now on iTunes. Outside of that im currently working on "SFBE3" which will be out later in 2012. I'm executive producing some projects for other up and coming artists and consulting some producers as well.
SeanTheRobot: Last but not least can you tell us a little more about the "Get Falyon to the Grammys campaign"? ..what's that all about?
SF: There's an opportunity for artists to perform at "GRAMMY LIVE" so I figured "Hey, why pass up an opportunity like that?" So I signed up and now it's up to the fans to NOMINATE me and "GET FALYON TO THE GRAMMYS"
SeanTheRobot: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview...if you have anything else you want to say, or let people know where they can find you online, let them know!
SF: Thanks for taking time to converse with a BEARD... always remember SEAN FALYON BE EVERYWHERE. Follow me on Twitter @SeanFalyon and visit www.SeanFalyon.com
